Cindy Sherman was born 1954 in New Jersey and attended the Buffalo State College with a focus in visual arts. After an starting her education with painting Sherman switched to photography where she stayed for the remainder of her education.
While the large part of her career has focused on photography with the publication of about ten books (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cindy_Sherman) she has also created or participated in film, T.V. art exhibits, ads, and other creative media.
The "The Complete Untitled Film Stills" series of images that Sherman began in 1977 and completed in 1980 is compiled of 69 black and white images which depict Sherman in various roles and settings that are reminiscent of 1950s and 1960s movies. Often this work is what Sherman is most recognized for.
Later in her career Cindy's art would become more controversial with work that collaborated with Robert Mapplethrope in the work "Sex". This work had mannequins placed in various sexual positions and acts.
Many of Cindy's works deal with themes such as women's role in society and in the media although Cindy refrains from identifying herself as Feminist.
In 1995 Cindy Sherman received a MacArthur Fellowship which provides $500,000 to winners. The award is provided to encourage future work by the recipient. (http://www.macfound.org).
